Late November Afternoon

It's amazing how much the light changes for the better this time of year.

Over the Hill

Being over the hill isn't so bad. At least you made it up the damn thing.

Just some perspective on where we are today. Digital Photography will never catch on?

The weather certainly can be the main subject of your image. Let it tell its story.

So it begins

The voice search just added to the google mobile app is nothing short of phenomenal. Lift your phone up to your ear (a natural way to use a phone) and speak into the phone after you hear a short beep type of sound.

Almost instantly you have your results. No typing! So simple, yet so revolutionary in execution.

The floodgates have been opened.

How well does it work? Very well!

Abandoned Road

It was a road we thought would take us somewhere. There were hopes and dreams on the other side, but now all of that is little more than a distant memory.

Google Voice Search

When Apple releases this update, it will change things a whole lot... and more.

A moment of clarity

From time to time everything falls into place and seems perfectly clear. Wouldn't it be nice if that happened more often?

Remain in Light

This is one of my favorite Talking Heads Albums - Here's A Link for the Amazon download. It's great!

I turn to stone

It's the shadows. They mold and give depth to your subject matter, and add to the illusion of 3D in a 2D world. The trick is to learn how to control this. As they say, it's all about light.

Tea Fire

This is a scene from the downtown area (last night). Helicopters could be heard all night long and we are wishing for the best. Scary stuff!

Modern Times

I've been thinking about putting together a series of shots that reflect the current state of the world. This image would certainly fit into that category.

Late afternoon light rocks. I can and warmth and shape to your subject matter, and in this case it couldn't be better.

Hard Times

I know times are tough, but still.... As I was entering the grocery story two cashiers were taking two cases of Heineken away from some young "dude" who insisted he paid for them.

I went about my business and was headed towards the check out when said same dude with a hoodie over his head is making his way past me and right out the door with two cases of Coors in hand.

I tried to follow him and alert the staff, but the place was packed and he got away.

There was no excuse for this guy stealing.

Behind the Waves

With the approaching Winter comes bigger waves and some great photo ops.

I saw this video posted over at the Strobist blog and thought I'd share. You can bet I'll be getting this DVD when I can.

Getting Crazy with the Cheese Whiz

I was just going crazy in photoshop, layer upon layer... having some fun. Why not.... anyway for some reason it reminded me of some Beck Lyrics.

Wave Flight

I've got to start getting down to the beach in the morning. It's not like I sleep in, so I've got no excuse. Scenes like this make it worth standing in the cold.

A Helping Hand

I made a special trip down to the beach just before sunset, as there was an approaching storm, which meant lots of clouds in the sky.

Clouds have possibilities, they can turn the sky into incredible colors, or they can make for a dull gray dud of a "sunset".

Luck was on my side. The sky lit up and it started to rain slightly. There was a couple on the beach along with me. When the rain started, they were quickly trying to get off the rocks they were sitting on to make the long trek back to wherever they had come from.

In that moment I was able to capture an inspirational image of love and friendship, just before I too had to double time it out of there.

I'm glad I took the chance on the sunset. Now a frozen moment in time.

Golden Beach

This image is the reason I shoot in manual mode (which isn't the case here). I usually set my aperture and do a test shot in aperture priority mode to see what the camera thinks the shutter speed should be.

What you are seeing here is what the scene looked like, but that's after lots of post processing. I had to bring the exposure up by a stop and a half and add some fill light. All done in Photoshop.

I have shots done in manual mode where I didn't have do this. The test shot told me right away that the camera was underexposing the image. All the more reason for doing it. Test shots quickly get me in the range I want to be in for a certain aperture by either dialing up or down the shutter speeds, or even changing the aperture.

My point here is that you can quickly get better results if you let your camera assist you. Take some test shots and dial in your settings to get the results you're after.

Why did I even bother keeping this shot? HDR - I can use it with other shots I took, but that's another subject.
