The Wise Cat

A lone cat sat upon a stone, eyes half-closed, tail wrapped around itself, meditating beneath the morning pine.

A monk passing by asked the master,
“Why does the cat meditate alone?”

The master said,
“To catch no mouse.”

The monk bowed, yet still wondered.
Later he returned and asked,
“What does the cat seek in stillness?”

The master replied,
“When hungry, it eats.
When tired, it sleeps.
When still, it is still.”

At that moment, the cat opened one eye, yawned, and walked away.

The monk cried out,
“I understand!”

The master said,
“Then why are you still there?”

Never Misplaced

A black cat sleeps
on the worn steps
of the temple.

Scrolls gather dust inside—
questions layered
upon questions.

No paw has turned them.

The monk reads of stillness,
of freedom from thought,
of the end of seeking.

The cat yawns—
unburdened
by arrival or departure.

Moonlight settles
equally on fur and stone.

No difference
is made of it.

The bell waits
to be struck—
the cat does not wait
to hear it.

What the monk studies,
the cat does not hold.

What the cat is,
no page can keep.

In the quiet,
one searches for peace—

the other
never misplaced it.

Two Cats

Two cats sit
where the path forgets itself.

The temple rests
without intention,
its roof holding moonlight
like a quiet bowl.

They gaze—
not at the temple,
not at the moon—
but into the stillness
that wears both.

Whiskers catch the night breeze.
Tails curl
like unanswered questions.

A bell does not ring,
yet something is heard.

The moon does not shine,
yet everything is seen.

Two cats—
or one silence
divided
just enough
to notice itself.

Small Stillness

At the red torii gate
a cat sits in the rain,
tail curled like a question
already answered.

Raindrops drum on wood and stone,
a soft percussion
for those who listen.

The cat does not move,
does not shiver or plead—
its breath is even,
its gaze untroubled.

Temple path, falling water,
fur and silence—
nothing divided.

In this small stillness
the world arranges itself:
gate, rain, cat, moment—
complete without intention.

When the clouds tire
and the rain thins to mist,
the cat stands,
stretches once,
and walks on—
as if nothing
and everything
has happened.

Masters of the Universe

Beneath the moon’s ethereal glow,
Cats prowl where shadows dare not go.
With velvet paws and eyes that gleam,
They reign supreme, the stars their theme.

Upon their thrones of sunlit spots,
They plot their schemes, untie life’s knots.
No leash nor law can bind their might,
For cats command both day and night.

In worlds unseen, their whispers guide,
The cosmic dance, the ebbing tide.
Masters of all, both near and far,
Each purr a spell, each claw a star.

The Ninja Cat

Beneath the moon’s soft silver glow,
Where shadows twist and whispers flow,
A ninja cat moves swift and light,
A phantom born of endless night.

Her fur as black as midnight's shroud,
She blends within the darkness proud.
Her eyes, like lanterns, gleam and spark,
Twin beacons slicing through the dark.

Across the rooftops, sleek she glides,
With silent grace, the wind she rides.
No mouse or foe can sense her near,
She strikes, then vanishes — none hear.

Her paws leave trails of mystery,
A legend cloaked in secrecy.
No leash can bind, no chain can hold,
This feline spirit fierce and bold.

The ninja cat, a tale unfolds,
Of courage, stealth, and heart of gold.
Defender of the weak by night,
She fades by dawn, her job done right.

Observe the Cat

In a quiet monastery nestled in the mountains, a monk approached the Master with a troubled mind.

"Master," he asked, "how can I achieve enlightenment?"

The Master smiled and pointed to a mystic cat lounging in a sunbeam.

"Observe the cat," the Master said.

The monk watched the cat for days. The cat stretched, slept, and chased shadows.

One morning, the monk exclaimed, "Master, I do not understand. The cat does nothing special."

The Master replied, "Precisely."

In that moment, the monk was enlightened.

Whiskers

Once upon a time, in the bustling metropolis of Gearsville, there lived a remarkable feline named Whiskers. Now, Whiskers wasn't your ordinary tabby. No, sir! Whiskers was a steampunk cat, with gears and gizmos aplenty adorning his sleek fur.

Whiskers had a penchant for adventure, and one day he decided to embark on a quest to find the legendary Golden Cog, said to possess the power to purr-fect any machine in the city.

With his trusty googles perched on his nose and his top hat at a jaunty angle, Whiskers set off on his journey. Along the way, he encountered all sorts of quirky characters, from clockwork mice to pneumatic parrots.

But Whiskers wasn't deterred. He pressed on, following the clues left behind by the ancient steam-powered automatons of yore.

Finally, after many meow-numental trials and tribulations, Whiskers reached the heart of the city, where the Golden Cog was said to be hidden. It was guarded by a fearsome contraption known as the Steam-Powered Sphinx, a mechanical marvel with the brains of a genius inventor and the body of a colossal cat.

Undeterred, Whiskers pounced into action, using his wit and charm to outsmart the Sphinx. With a flick of his tail and a well-placed paw, Whiskers managed to snatch the Golden Cog from right under the Sphinx's metallic nose.

As he made his triumphant return to Gearsville, Whiskers was hailed as a hero by all the citizens. The Golden Cog was placed in the city's central clocktower, where it hummed and whirred, keeping time with the beat of the city's mechanical heart.

And so, with the Golden Cog safely in place, Whiskers settled back into his cozy steampunk lair, content in the knowledge that he had saved the day once again. But knowing Whiskers, it wouldn't be long before he embarked on his next daring adventure, for a steampunk cat's work is never done!

Masked Angels

In the realm where feline whispers dance and angels tread on padded paws, a koan was born:

"When the midnight moon cloaks the world in obsidian silk, and the whispers of night take the form of cats with empyreal grace, how do you find your way to heaven's embrace?"

In the twilight of this mystical koan, one must ponder the mysteries of guidance and disguise, for it is within the soft purrs of angels masked as cats that the path to heaven's gate is revealed.

Tide of Desolation

In our story, little was left of humanity. The once-mighty United States had been torn asunder by the ferocious grip of the 2nd Civil War, leaving the nation in ruins and its citizens mostly consigned to the annals of history. Cities that once teemed with life now lay in eerie silence, their streets cracked and overgrown with nature's reclamation.

Occasionally, amidst the desolation, a glimmer of life persisted, albeit in the most unexpected form. Along the rugged coastline that had once been home to thriving communities, a solitary cat would sometimes be seen. These feline wanderers seemed to have forged an unlikely alliance with the brine and the abandoned boats that lined the shore. It was as if they had made their final stand here, on the edge of the world, against the tide of desolation.

These cats, with their sleek, weather-worn coats, displayed an almost instinctual affinity for the ocean's edge. They prowled the rusty skeletons of derelict ships, sought shelter in the decrepit beachside cottages, and observed the tumultuous sea with an air of quiet reverence. Their presence lent a sense of serene continuity to an otherwise shattered landscape.

Perhaps it was the rhythmic lullaby of the waves, the relentless ebb and flow of the tides, that drew these enigmatic felines to this desolate coast. It was as though they had found solace in the vast, untamed expanse of the sea, where the remnants of human civilization had been overthrown by nature's reawakening.

In this bleak, post-apocalyptic world, the cats had become the unlikely guardians of a fragile, almost mystical connection between life and the forces of nature. Their presence offered a glimpse of hope amid the desolation, a reminder that life had not been entirely extinguished. It was a testament to the resilience of both animals and the enduring spirit of a world forever transformed by the tempestuous currents of history.

Zen Masters

Cats have long been admired for their seemingly calm and Zen-like demeanor. While we can't say that cats consciously practice Zen philosophy, there are several qualities and behaviors exhibited by cats that we can learn from in the context of mindfulness and a more peaceful way of living:

1. Presence and Mindfulness: Cats are masters of living in the present moment. They are highly attuned to their surroundings, and they don't dwell on past mistakes or worry about the future. This ability to stay present and mindful is a fundamental aspect of Zen practice.

2. Contentment: Cats often appear content with very little. They can find joy in simple things, like a patch of sunlight or a cardboard box. This reminds us of the importance of appreciating the small, everyday pleasures in life and finding contentment in the here and now.

3. Independence: Cats are known for their independence and self-reliance. They do what they want when they want to, and they don't seek constant external validation. This can serve as a lesson in self-sufficiency and self-acceptance.

4. Patience and Stillness: Cats are excellent at waiting patiently for the right moment to pounce or the perfect time to rest. Their stillness and patience teach us the value of waiting without anxiety and embracing tranquility.

5. Non-Attachment: Cats may form strong bonds with their human companions, but they are not overly attached. They can be alone for hours and remain content. This is a reminder of the Zen principle of non-attachment, which teaches us not to cling too tightly to people, possessions, or outcomes.

6. Acceptance of Imperfection: Cats don't strive for perfection. They are unapologetically themselves, and they accept their imperfections. Learning to accept our flaws and those of others can lead to greater inner peace.

7. Playfulness: Cats have a playful and curious nature, which can remind us to maintain a childlike wonder and playfulness throughout our lives. Play can be a form of meditation and relaxation.

8. Self-Care: Cats spend a considerable amount of time grooming themselves, which is a form of self-care. This practice reminds us of the importance of taking care of our physical and mental well-being.

9. Resilience: Cats can often bounce back from difficult situations, and they adapt to changing circumstances. This resilience can be a valuable lesson for us in facing life's challenges with grace and adaptability.

While cats may not actively practice Zen, observing their behaviors and adopting some of their qualities can help us lead more peaceful and mindful lives. It's important to remember that these qualities vary from cat to cat, and not all cats exhibit these traits in the same way. The key is to adapt these lessons to your own life in a way that brings you greater peace and mindfulness.

The Warrior Cat

In the quiet depths of the night, under a sky adorned with countless stars, a mysterious event took place that would forever change the lives of those it touched. In a small village nestled amidst rolling hills, the air was filled with a sense of tranquility, unaware of the celestial visitor about to descend upon them.

Unbeknownst to the humans, a shimmering portal materialized in the heavens, radiating an ethereal glow that illuminated the darkness. From within the portal emerged a majestic warrior cat, his fur gleaming like silver under the moon's gentle light. His eyes, deep pools of wisdom, held a serenity that could rival the calmest waters.

As he stepped onto the Earth, a hush fell upon the village. People peeked through their windows, bewildered by the sight of this otherworldly creature, uncertain of whether to feel fear or awe. The warrior cat, sensing their hesitation, emitted a soft, reassuring purr that echoed through the night.

"I have come to show you the way of zen," he spoke in a voice that carried both strength and gentleness. "In a world often filled with chaos and strife, I bring teachings of inner peace and harmony."

The village elder, a wise man with a long white beard, approached the magnificent cat with cautious curiosity. "Who are you, divine messenger, and what brings you to our humble abode?" he asked, his voice trembling with respect.

"I am a guardian from the celestial realm," the warrior cat replied, bowing his head slightly. "I have been sent to share the wisdom of zen with your people, for it is a path that can lead to enlightenment and contentment."

In the days that followed, the warrior cat wandered through the village, always accompanied by a sense of tranquility that seemed to follow him like a gentle breeze. He taught the villagers the art of mindfulness, encouraging them to find beauty in the simplest of things – the rustling leaves, the laughter of children, and the dance of sunlight upon the water.

He spoke of acceptance, urging them to embrace the impermanence of life and to let go of their attachment to material possessions. The villagers found themselves looking inward, exploring the depths of their hearts, and understanding that true happiness came not from external sources, but from within.

Under the warrior cat's guidance, the villagers learned the power of meditation, finding solace in the stillness of their minds. As they sat in quiet contemplation, they discovered a newfound sense of unity with nature and with one another.

Word of the divine visitor spread beyond the village, and people from far and wide came to listen to his teachings. From bustling cities to remote mountains, the warrior cat journeyed, leaving a trail of tranquility and understanding in his wake.

With each passing day, the humans became more attuned to the ways of Zen, and their lives transformed. They learned to let go of anger and resentment, choosing forgiveness and compassion instead. The warrior cat watched with a sense of fulfillment, knowing that his mission was bearing fruit.

As the years rolled by, the celestial guardian continued his travels, imparting the wisdom of zen wherever he went. And though he eventually returned to the heavens, his presence remained imprinted on the hearts of those he had touched. The humans carried his teachings like a sacred flame, passing them down through generations, forever grateful for the day the warrior cat had graced their world with his divine presence.

Not seeking

In the heart of a serene valley, nestled amidst lush greenery and glistening streams, lived a Zen master named Koji. He was revered for his wisdom and insight, but unlike many seekers of truth, Koji had chosen a path less traveled – a path of being rather than seeking. His days were spent in quiet contemplation, communing with nature, and guiding those who sought his counsel.

One fine morning, the valley woke up to the sun's gentle embrace, casting a golden hue over everything it touched. Koji sat outside his modest hut, a cup of tea in hand, watching the dance of sunlight on the dew-kissed grass. As he took a sip, he felt a profound connection with the world around him – a connection that transcended words and concepts.

A young disciple, named Sora, approached him. Sora was enthusiastic, always seeking knowledge and yearning to unravel the mysteries of life. He admired Koji's peaceful demeanor but couldn't understand why the master didn't delve deeper into the esoteric teachings as others did.

"Master Koji," Sora asked with curiosity, "why don't you pursue the profound teachings of the ancient texts or embark on distant journeys to seek enlightenment?"

Koji smiled warmly at the young disciple and replied, "Ah, dear Sora, the pursuit of truth is like chasing a mirage. The more you run after it, the farther it seems. Instead, I have chosen to embrace life as it is, without the desire for something beyond this moment. In being content with what is, one can truly understand the nature of existence."

Sora pondered Koji's words but remained unconvinced. He continued his training, striving to master various techniques and philosophies in his quest for enlightenment. Despite making progress in his studies, there was a restlessness within him that prevented him from finding true peace.

One evening, as the setting sun painted the sky with hues of orange and pink, Sora returned to the hut to find Koji sitting outside, his eyes closed, and a serene smile gracing his lips. Sora was intrigued by the master's expression of bliss and decided to speak from his heart.

"Master," Sora said humbly, "I have tried to follow your path of being, but I find it difficult to quell my thirst for knowledge and understanding. My mind is restless, and I cannot find the peace that you seem to possess so effortlessly."

Koji opened his eyes and regarded Sora with compassion. "It is natural, my young friend," he said gently. "The mind is like a wild horse, always seeking new pastures. But just as a horse finds calmness when it returns to its stable, the mind finds tranquility when it comes home to the present moment."

Sora felt a deep resonance with Koji's words, and as he sat beside the master, he let go of his desire to seek answers. He allowed himself to be fully present, savoring the beauty of the fading sunset and the sounds of nature surrounding them.

As time passed, Sora gradually embraced the path of being, and in doing so, he discovered a newfound sense of peace within himself. He realized that true elation wasn't found in external achievements or esoteric knowledge but in embracing the present moment with an open heart.

And so, the valley continued to bask in the wisdom of Koji, the Zen master who had chosen not to seek but to be – a beacon of tranquility and elation for all who crossed his path. His serene smile became a reflection of the boundless joy that comes from surrendering to life's unfolding, and his presence touched the hearts of those willing to embrace the beauty of the eternal now.

Amara

In a time long ago, in a land shrouded in mystery and ancient wisdom, there lived a remarkable cat named Amara. Amara was no ordinary feline; she possessed a deep understanding of the universe and a profound connection to the energies of the world. While most cats were content with a life of leisure, Amara felt a calling within her, a purpose to share her enlightenment with humanity.

Amara resided in a small village nestled amidst rolling hills, where people lived simple lives and sought solace in the routines of their daily existence. The villagers were oblivious to the profound wisdom that lay hidden within their midst, embodied in the form of a humble cat. They regarded Amara as a curious creature with a mesmerizing gaze, unaware of the transformative power that lay beneath her gaze.

One day, as the sun cast its golden rays upon the village, Amara ventured beyond the familiar streets, her paws guiding her toward a nearby monastery. She had heard whispers of the monks' pursuit of spiritual enlightenment and believed they would be receptive to her teachings. The monks, deeply attuned to the secrets of the universe, were immediately captivated by Amara's presence. They recognized the ancient wisdom that emanated from her being and welcomed her with open hearts.

Under the guidance of the monks, Amara immersed herself in the rituals and meditative practices of the monastery. She absorbed their teachings with an insatiable hunger, combining their ancient wisdom with her innate understanding of the universe. With each passing day, Amara's aura grew brighter, her connection to the cosmic energies strengthening.

Word of the remarkable cat spread throughout the region, and people from far and wide began to seek her out, drawn by a magnetic force that transcended logic. The villagers, plagued by the burdens of their everyday lives, yearned for the peace and tranquility that Amara seemed to embody. They traveled to the monastery, seeking solace in the hope that this enigmatic feline could guide them toward enlightenment.

Amara, perceptive and compassionate, greeted each visitor with a serene demeanor. She would lock eyes with them, her gaze penetrating their souls, and transmit her wisdom through a silent exchange of energy. In those moments, time seemed to stand still, and a profound sense of peace washed over the weary souls.

As the years passed, the village underwent a remarkable transformation. The once-burdened villagers now radiated tranquility and compassion. They embraced the wisdom Amara had shared, incorporating it into their daily lives. Conflict diminished, and kindness flourished. The village became a sanctuary of harmony and understanding, a testament to the profound impact one small cat had made on an entire community.

Amara's presence, however, was not bound by the physical realm. As her journey on this earthly plane neared its end, she began to transcend the limitations of her feline form. She became an eternal spirit, forever interwoven with the fabric of the universe, her teachings echoing through the ages.

Even now, centuries later, tales of Amara, the ancient cat who bestowed zen upon humanity, continue to be told. Her legacy serves as a reminder that enlightenment can be found in the simplest of beings, and that the power to transform lives lies within each of us. And if you ever find yourself in a quiet village, surrounded by gentle souls and a mysterious sense of serenity, you might just catch a glimpse of Amara's spirit, forever watching over those who seek the path to enlightenment.

Our inner cat

The mystical cat, well-versed in Zen philosophy, imparts the following advice for humanity:

1. Embrace the present moment: The cat encourages humanity to be fully present in each moment. Let go of worries about the past or the future and focus on experiencing and appreciating the here and now.

2. Find stillness within: The cat emphasizes the importance of inner stillness and silence. Take time for solitude and introspection to connect with your true self. In the midst of chaos, seek the calmness within you.

3. Accept the impermanence of life: The cat reminds humanity that everything in life is transient. Change is inevitable, so learn to let go of attachments and find peace in the ever-flowing nature of existence.

4. Cultivate mindfulness: The cat encourages the practice of mindfulness in all aspects of life. Be fully aware of your thoughts, feelings, and actions, and engage with each moment with clarity and intention.

5. Embrace simplicity: The cat advises humanity to simplify their lives. Let go of unnecessary possessions, desires, and distractions. By embracing simplicity, one can find clarity, focus, and a deeper appreciation for what truly matters.

6. Nurture interconnectedness: The cat reminds humanity that all beings are interconnected. Treat others with kindness, compassion, and empathy. Recognize the inherent value and interdependence of all living things.

7. Live authentically: The cat encourages humanity to be true to themselves. Follow your inner voice and live in alignment with your values and passions. Embrace your uniqueness and express it fully in the world.

8. Seek wisdom beyond words: The cat reminds humanity that true wisdom lies beyond mere words. Look beyond surface-level knowledge and strive for direct experiences and intuitive understanding.

Remember, the advice of the mystical cat is not meant to be taken literally but rather as metaphoric guidance to cultivate a more mindful, compassionate, and fulfilling existence.

Drift Away

Let us drift away for a moment,
And clear our minds in tranquil flight.
Away from the chaos and the torment,
Into the realm of serenity and light.

Close your eyes and feel the gentle breeze,
As it whispers secrets in our ears.
Let the worries of the world appease,
As we soar above all doubts and fears.

Leave behind the weight of earthly strife,
And embrace the solace of this reprieve.
In this respite, where time is but a fleeting life,
We find solace in the simplicity we receive.

Away, away, we shall wander,
In the realms where dreams reside.
Where thoughts are free to meander,
And the burdens of reality subside.

Through fields of golden blossoms, we'll stroll,
Where every step is bathed in pure delight.
The fragrance of freedom will fill our soul,
As we revel in this sacred flight.

With each breath, inhale the peace,
Exhale the chaos, let it dissipate.
Find solace in the silence's release,
As we let our weary minds abate.

Oh, let us drift away for a moment,
To find harmony within the boundless skies.
Clearing our minds, we become potent,
Renewed spirits, ready to once again rise.

For in these fleeting moments we find,
The strength to face the challenges ahead.
With clarity and peace intertwined,
We emerge, revitalized and spirit-fed.

So let us drift away, my friend,
In this sanctuary, far from the noise.
In stillness, our souls shall mend,
And find serenity amidst the poise.

For a moment, let us drift away,
And clear our minds with tranquil grace.
To return to the world, rejuvenated, we may,
With a newfound clarity and an embrace.
