Once upon time

Digital publishing is a labor of love,
ninety percent work, ten percent art.

To get things right, you must have patience.

There will be a lot of trial and error to get the coding right.

Sure, it gets easier as you go along, as do all things,
but you really need to block out some time for this.

Be prepared to put a lot of blood, sweet and tears into it.

The reward will make the effort worth it, so hang tough.

I'm sure the process will improve, in the meaning there will be growing pains.

Ready to repair

You just can't fix everything.  The key is to know what you can fix, and being ready and able to do so.

Whatever makes you happy

Just using a little flash to fill in the shadows a bit. It helps in bringing out some of the details that would have been lost.

Wanna Ride?

The interiors of vintage automobiles are just as interesting as the exteriors, just not as easy to photograph. That's where using a flash came in handy at this year's car show, adding some much needed light to help capture the little details.

Old Ford

In this photo it's a little more obvious that I used a flash. You can actually see the driver, and detail in the wheel wells. Without the flash, those areas would be a lot darker. Now the question is: Does this improve the photo?

Light Painting

The other night a friend and I went out to do some sunset/night photography. Working with flash is an area I really want to improve in.

One of the things I wanted to try was light painting. What I learned was that I really need to bring a much brighter flashlight and/or do longer exposures.... or both.

In the case here, I thought it would be fun to walk through my exposure and pop the flash myself.

The results are more or less as I expected.

Chillin'

I don't make New Year's Resolutions.... those are a waste of time. However, I do set goals, and this year I'd like to work on portraits and using flash... We'll see how it goes.

Lenten Mission

I had this idea to try something a little different last night. Around Easter the church drapes a purple cloth over the cross in front of the Santa Barbara Mission.

I thought I'd try making an image of that (the cloth draped cross) just after sunset with the Mission in the background.

The Mission is lit up at night, but the cross isn't and would need to be lit by flash.

So, that is exactly with I did. I lit the cross with my flash and finished my 2.5 second exposure with the Mission and waning light in the background.

As you can see, I need a little more practice. I was just happy that the concept will in fact work.

Mixed Emotions

Light and color. The same thing really, and how do you photograph it? and what does it say? Fragments of time dancing through the air...

Lava Lamp

I decided to try to shoot something in the strobist fashion, basically lighting a light. It was a little tricky, but once I got it dialed in, it wasn't too bad. Turned out to be more of a matter of deciding the amount of detail I wanted to capture in black surface of the lamp. The lesson was not to over power the light coming out of the lava lamp. Sure, I need more work at balancing light, but it's starting to make more sense.

Sensible Shoes

F16 at 1/125 - those were the camera settings for this particular shot. Though not the settings that I would have normally used, they were the ones that worked best under the lighting that was being used and for the area I was working with.

The result was that I got a bit more DOF, but in this case it seems to work just fine. It really helped having a patient model to work with while we tried different lighting situations. On to the next Strobist endeavor....

Lucky Break

Well, I'm still playing around with my speed lights and off camera flash. Working with white items against white background isn't too difficult, though I could be a lot better at it. Still having fun. toying around with concept images. My microstock agencies have accepted some of the images, so I must be on the right track...

Chillin'

Great day today, so far! I had a shoot at dawn and got to play with long shadows, and such, but the real fun came after that. You got it! I got to play in a studio, and work with a model. I'm still learning to work with strobes.... I've got tons more to learn, but Strobist is sure helping me on my journey into the world of lighting...

Strobist

I've been reading Strobist a lot lately. My goal is to try and expand my photography by learning to use lighting. My friend Brian volunteered and was kind enough to let me play with using my borrowed Nikon SB-600 AF Speedlight. All I have to say is that I've to a lot to learn and more equipment to buy. Photography is an expensive endeavor.
