A modern rule of thumb for the current internet age of images is that of the thumbnail. Can you tell what something is when it's small and is it compelling enough to get you to take a longer look? You could also call this the postage stamp rule. With the age of digital, you've got to really put an effort into making your work stand out and/or merit a longer look.
