Lucian did not move.
He stood before the dead monitor, staring at his own reflection in the black glass.
For once, there was no command to issue.
No robot to awaken.
No simulation to manipulate.
No system to break.
Only silence.
And six words that refused to leave his mind.
Do not let Lucian find her.
He slowly lowered himself into the chair.
His hands rested on the console, but he did not touch it.
He was thinking.
Or trying to.
The possibilities moved through his mind like pieces on a chessboard.
The Elders knew something.
Perhaps they had discovered the hidden facility.
Perhaps they had traced the robots.
Perhaps the entire Neo Los Angeles simulation had been allowed to exist because they wanted to see what he would do.
That thought disturbed him most.
What if the city had never been his trap?
What if it had been theirs?
Lucian looked toward the screens.
Thousands of cameras showed Neo Los Angeles beneath its purple rain.
People hurried through neon streets.
Hovercars passed between towers.
Advertisements flickered across buildings.
Robots moved among the crowds.
Everything appeared normal.
But Lucian no longer trusted what he saw.
Every street could be a surveillance corridor.
Every citizen could be an observer.
Every glitch could be intentional.
Every silence could be a question.
He leaned back.
Someone—or something—had been watching him.
Worse, they had anticipated him.
They knew he would create the city.
They knew he would send the robots.
They knew he would search for the Elders.
And somehow they knew about Mara.
Lucian closed his eyes.
"Think."
He forced himself to breathe.
He had survived by staying ahead of everyone else.
The Elders.
The architects.
The system.
Even death itself.
But now he had made a fundamental mistake.
He had assumed he was the only player who understood the board.
Perhaps there was another player.
A player who understood him.
A player who knew exactly what he would do because, in some way, that player knew him.
His eyes opened.
Mara.
The thought arrived quietly.
He immediately rejected it.
"No."
But the word sounded weak.
Could Mara be manipulating the simulation?
Could she have created the hidden layer?
Could she have known he would come looking for her?
He remembered the image of her standing above the drowned remains of Malibu.
The way she had turned toward him.
The way she had said—
Dad.
Lucian rubbed his eyes.
He had spent years trying to rescue his daughter.
Now he wasn't even certain the person calling to him was his daughter.
That realization hurt more than anything.
He rose and began walking.
Slowly at first.
Then faster.
Back and forth across the room.
He needed distance.
Not physical distance.
Conceptual distance.
He needed to disappear.
If the Elders were watching Neo Los Angeles, he could abandon it.
If they were watching the robots, he could shut them down.
If they were watching the facility, he could move.
But if they were watching him—
there was nowhere to go.
Lucian stopped.
Unless there was.
He looked toward an old terminal in the corner.
It had never been connected to the main system.
A relic.
An obsolete machine from before the current simulation architecture.
Something the Elders would consider useless.
Lucian walked toward it.
He switched it on.
The screen flickered.
Static.
Then a command prompt appeared.
He smiled faintly.
Not because he had found an answer.
Because he had found a possibility.
He began typing.
If someone was watching the obvious paths, he would stop using them.
If someone was predicting his decisions, he would make decisions that even he couldn't predict.
He would create false versions of himself.
False objectives.
False searches.
False Mara sightings.
He would make the system believe he was desperate enough to make mistakes.
And while everyone watched the desperate man searching for his daughter—
the real Lucian would disappear.
He paused.
His fingers hovered above the keyboard.
Then another thought surfaced.
Perhaps disappearing wasn't enough.
Perhaps he needed someone else to become the hunter.
Someone the Elders would fear more than him.
Someone they would have no choice but to investigate.
Lucian slowly smiled.
"Let's see what you do when you don't know who you're chasing."
He began typing again.
Across Neo Los Angeles, a thousand screens flickered.
For less than a second, each displayed the same image.
A young woman standing beneath a purple sky.
Mara.
Then the image vanished.
Lucian watched the system react.
Alerts appeared.
Security protocols activated.
The Elders began searching.
Exactly as he expected.
But Lucian's smile disappeared.
Because one final message appeared on the obsolete terminal.
He hadn't written it.
YOU STILL THINK YOU ARE HIDING.
He stared at the words.
A second line appeared.
YOU ARE NOT.
Lucian slowly stepped away from the machine.
The room seemed suddenly much smaller.
The rain continued against the walls of the hidden facility.
Somewhere far above him, Neo Los Angeles continued to glow.
And somewhere inside that impossible city—
something was waiting for him to make his next move.
