Sunset Photographer

It's hard to believe that a beach would be empty like this during the Summer. Not that I mind all that much as it really works in my favor, and makes it so much easier for me to compose a simple shot like this.

Up Close

When you fill the frame you get an image that tells a different story. It's really all about the sum of the parts.

Thank you Michael

The world is a better place because Michael Jackson shared his heart, soul, and talent with us. His gift to us was his music, and we are better for it. Too bad we didn't return the kindness.

Big Clouds

It's amazing how a few clouds can give such drama to an ordinary scene you've seen dozens of times.

The Longest Day

I've been wanting to know where the sun is going to be at a given time for a particular location for the longest time. There are various ways to do this each with its own merits.

The one that I've been using the most is just memorizing where things are going to be based on several years of observation. This works great if you keep shooting the same places year after year. Not so well for a place you've never been before.

Getting the shot

Some people will go to great lengths to make a photograph. It's the first time I've seen someone go this far.

Don't try this at home

Though the conditions aren't ideal, there are still plenty of unique images to be had at a parade.

From the beach

So, I wanted to do some early evening photography. What I was after was graduated skies mixed with lights on buildings. So much for the skies I wanted. Hmmm, it seems it just may be the wrong time of year for what I was after, as the setting sun wasn't in the right spot.

Solution: Try again at a different time of year, and at low tide so that I can shoot from a broader range of positions.

Give Us More

One of the things that I miss with downloading music, is that you don't get all the little extras, such as lyrics, liner notes, and artwork. Case in point: Tattoo You by the rolling stones. "Youts" as they were called in the movie My Cousin Vinny would never know that the backside of the Album contained this great image of Keith Richards all done up in tats... Lets hope the digital world expands to add back these little things we used to take for granted.

Armed and Dangerous

Nothing like a parade to provide lots to shoot. In this case from both sides of the lens.

Give me some sun

Separating a lone subject from the crowds during a parade is quite a challenge and is something that will keep you on your toes.

Heavy Load

Somethings, no matter how hard you try, it's hard to isolate your subject from its background.

At the Station

The early morning hour and partially cloudy skies provided just the right combination needed to capture this train station favorably.

Under the Umbrella

Wasn't too hard for me to find material for images that say Summer's here... all I had to do was head to the beach.

Blue Umbrella

So I went out looking for signs of Summer, and think I was on the right track. There were these umbrellas blooming everywhere.

Let the parade begin

Summer will be upon us in just one short week. Time to fill our cards with images of the season.

Blackfin

I've been taking advantage of what has been mostly overcast skies. In general this type of light is"flat" and doesn't do much to complement your subject matter.

At the same time, if the cloud cover isn't too dense, the sun will break through form time to time. The clouds are in a sense acting as a huge softbox and restricting the contrast ratio.

This makes for good lighting, depending on your subject matter, such as cars, or water, or most anything with a reflective surfaces. Gone are the specular highlights that are often a challenge to photograph around, or control.

Thank you Nature.

What's required is time, patience and watching the cloud cover for breaks that work in your favor.

Dreaming is Free

There's nothing wrong with wishful thinking, just be careful about what you wish for.

On the rails

Got a long lens? Use it. Fill your frame. Less is often more, and telling a story with fewer elements rather than every element in the scene will help drive an image and get your point across much better.

A funny thing happened

Leo and Jimmy had a lot of catching up to do. They hadn't seen each other for years....

A Day at the Beach

I've been playing around with an HD Camcorder. I like it, but now it looks like I'm going to have to get some better software than came with it. I'd like to be able to overlay sound, and even do some frame by frame editing if need be...

Working by hindsight

It's no wonder we hit a wall, we've been making decisions while focused on our rear ends.

The Crossing

I was trying something new (sort of) and decided to just drive around with the camera clicking as I went along. Kind of a version off see if something sticks. Not the greatest photo, but still fits in with my mapping project.

Long Way Out

Telling a visual story differently can be as simple as changing your lens. Your perspective will change accordingly.

Looking into the future

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to look into the future? Think how simple things would be, but then again where would the challenge be....

When the tide's out

Low tides and clouds will give you some of the best conditions when photographing along the coast.

Watch the tides and make sure you can get out of the spots you've gotten into before you're cut off by high coastal waters.

Walk on by

The beach can be a special place. Somewhere where we can surrender our thoughts to the breaking waves, and just enjoy the moment.

On the streets

The need to communicate is a strong one. Sometimes words aren't the best way to say something.

On Holiday

Color, shapes, texture, and pattern. Always amazing how the right combination of these elements can tell a compelling story.
