Part of Everything

Beneath a sky crowded with stars, a lone figure sat in meditation beside a quiet stream.

The water moved gently through the darkness, carrying fragments of starlight around smooth stones and into the valley beyond.

Beside him stood an ancient tree, its twisted branches reaching toward the heavens. It had grown there longer than anyone could remember. It asked nothing of the night and expected nothing from the morning.

The figure sat beneath its shadow.

He had come searching for peace.

But as the hours passed, the search slowly disappeared.

The stream did not search for peace.

The tree did not search for meaning.

The stars did not wonder where they belonged.

They simply were.

And gradually, so was he.

His breathing became the rhythm of the water. His thoughts drifted like clouds across the stars and vanished. The boundary between himself and the quiet world around him began to soften.

There was no longer a man sitting beside a stream.

There was only the stream.

The tree.

The stars.

The earth.

And the silence holding them all.

For a little while, he belonged to nothing because he had become part of everything.

Then the eastern horizon began to brighten.

Dawn came quietly, as it always does.

The stars faded.

The stream caught the first golden light.

The ancient tree cast a long shadow across the earth.

The figure opened his eyes.

He had not found peace.

He had simply discovered that peace had been sitting beside him all night.
