Tangled Web of Timelines

Mara hit the stone floor hard enough to knock the breath from her.

For several seconds she could do nothing but lie there.

The last thing she remembered was the red landscape of ancient Mars, Seren's hand in hers, the immense pyramid glowing beneath the alien stars.

Then—

nothing.

Now there was darkness.

Dust.

The smell of old paper.

And somewhere nearby, the fading electrical hum of a portal collapsing.

Mara pushed herself upright.

"Seren?"

Her voice disappeared into the enormous chamber.

No answer.

She slowly stood.

Rows of books rose around her, disappearing into the darkness overhead. Shelves stretched farther than her eyes could follow. Some were made of wood. Others of stone. A few appeared almost organic, their surfaces covered in strange geometric patterns that seemed to move when she wasn't looking directly at them.

The Black Archive.

She didn't know the name yet.

But something inside her recognized the place.

That frightened her more than anything else.

Mara turned toward the center of the chamber.

A faint distortion hung in the air.

A circular absence.

The residue of a portal.

Something—or someone—had just passed through it.

She approached cautiously.

Her fingers reached toward the void.

Nothing.

Only cold air.

"Cassian..."

The name came to her unexpectedly.

She didn't know how she knew it.

But she knew.

He had been here.

Moments before her arrival.

And Seren was nowhere.

She looked around frantically.

"Seren!"

Silence.

Then, somewhere in the darkness, a book fell from a shelf.

Mara spun around.

The sound echoed through the archive.

She waited.

Nothing.

Another book fell.

Then another.

Not randomly.

A pattern.

Mara followed the sounds.

She entered a narrower chamber.

There, on a stone table, lay an enormous open volume.

Its pages were covered with diagrams that made her head ache when she tried to understand them.

She leaned closer.

The drawings showed pyramids.

Portals.

Human figures.

Cities.

Planets.

And something that looked disturbingly familiar.

A human body rendered as geometry.

Mara stared at it.

The figure's internal structure wasn't biological.

It was architectural.

Layers of circuitry.

Synthetic organs.

Energy pathways.

A central lattice running through the skull.

Her own body.

Or something remarkably close to it.

Mara stepped backward.

"No..."

She touched her chest.

Her heartbeat was steady.

Warm.

Real.

At least it felt real.

But the image in the book suggested otherwise.

A page turned by itself.

Mara froze.

Words appeared across the paper.

Not ink.

Light.

CONSTRUCT: MARA

She stopped breathing.

Below it:

HYBRID COGNITIVE ENTITY

STATUS: ACTIVE

AWARENESS: UNAUTHORIZED

LOCATION: UNKNOWN

Mara's hands began to tremble.

"Who wrote this?"

No answer.

Then another line appeared.

ORIGIN: ARCHIVE ITERATION 7

She stared at it.

Iteration.

The word echoed through her mind.

She remembered Cassian's ancient book.

Earth.

Multiple iterations.

Persistent simulation.

Her stomach tightened.

Something moved behind her.

Mara spun around.

A Sentinel stood at the entrance.

Its skull-like face glowed with amber eyes.

It regarded her without moving.

She backed away.

"Don't."

The Sentinel tilted its head.

"Identity confirmed."

Mara's voice shook.

"Where is Seren?"

The Sentinel remained silent.

"Where is he?"

"Companion not present."

"Where did he go?"

The machine paused.

"Unknown."

Mara stared at it.

For some reason, that answer frightened her more than if it had simply said he was dead.

The Sentinel stepped toward the table.

Its gaze fell upon the open book.

The amber glow of its eyes intensified.

"Restricted archive accessed."

"I didn't access anything."

"You are accessing it now."

Mara looked down.

The pages were turning rapidly.

Images flashed before her.

Ancient cities.

The first simulations.

Architects standing beneath pyramids.

Worlds collapsing.

Machines watching civilizations rise and fall.

And then—

Cassian.

Not as he was now.

Younger.

Different clothes.

Different world.

Standing before a civilization already beginning to fracture.

Mara watched him speak to a crowd.

She couldn't hear the words.

But she understood the expression on his face.

He was studying them.

Testing them.

Learning exactly how much pressure was required to make neighbors distrust one another.

The vision changed.

Cassian walking through another world.

Then another.

Always arriving at pivotal moments.

Always leaving behind division.

Wars.

Revolutions.

Collapse.

The title appeared across the page:

THE DESTROYER OF WORLDS

Mara whispered,

"He's been doing this for thousands of years."

The Sentinel answered.

"Confirmed."

"Why?"

The machine remained motionless.

"His stated objective is unclear."

Mara looked back at the fading image of Cassian.

"No."

She shook her head.

"I think I understand."

She looked around the archive.

"He doesn't want to rule them."

The Sentinel waited.

"He wants to prove something."

Mara's eyes moved across the shelves.

Cassian had spent ages creating worlds only to destroy them.

Not because destruction itself satisfied him.

Because he believed collapse was inevitable.

He believed every civilization carried the seeds of its own destruction.

He simply wanted to prove that he could find them.

And perhaps, somewhere along the way, he had stopped caring about the difference between an experiment and a life.

Mara looked toward the place where the portal had vanished.

"And Seren?"

The Sentinel's eyes brightened.

A new image appeared above the stone table.

Seren.

Walking alone.

Somewhere else.

Somewhen else.

Mara stepped closer.

"Where is that?"

The Sentinel answered:

"Unknown."

The image flickered.

For a fraction of a second, Mara saw Seren turn toward something beyond the edge of the frame.

His expression changed.

He looked frightened.

Then the image disappeared.

Mara closed her eyes.

"He's alive."

The Sentinel did not confirm it.

But Mara didn't need confirmation.

She knew.

Behind them, somewhere deep within the archive, another book opened.

Its pages turned without human hands.

A diagram appeared.

Two points of light separated by an immense distance.

One labeled MARA.

The other SEREN.

Between them stretched a tangled web of timelines.

And at the center of the web was a third point.

CASSIAN VOSS.

Mara stared at it.

For the first time she understood the true danger.

Cassian wasn't simply running from the Sentinels.

He was moving through the Timeverse deliberately.

And somehow, without understanding how, Mara and Seren had become part of his design.

She looked at the Sentinel.

"Take me to him."

The machine's amber eyes brightened.

"Which version?"

Mara stared.

The question chilled her.

Then she looked back at the impossible web of timelines.

"The one who still has a choice."

The Sentinel remained perfectly still.

Then, for the first time, it lowered its head in something that almost resembled a bow.

"That designation is imprecise."

Mara gave a faint, exhausted smile.

"So am I."

And somewhere beyond the walls of the Black Archive, the Timeverse shifted again.
