The Temple at Dusk

I stood before the temple as evening gathered quietly around me.

The last light of day rested upon the curved tiles of the roof, turning them the color of old gold. Beyond the temple walls, the world was slowly surrendering its noise. Birds disappeared into the darkening trees. The wind softened. Somewhere far away, a bell sounded once, then allowed the silence to return.

I did not enter.

There was nothing I needed to ask.

I simply stood beneath the fading sky and watched the golden light disappear from the roof, one tile at a time. Shadows climbed the wooden pillars and gathered beneath the eaves. The temple seemed less like a building now and more like a presence—ancient, patient, unmoving.

The quiet shadow before me seemed to hold everything.

The mountains beyond it.

The trees bending in the evening breeze.

The distant moon waiting behind the clouds.

Even my own restless thoughts seemed to belong to that darkness.

For a moment, there was no past to remember and no future to anticipate. There was only the cool evening air against my face, the faint fragrance of incense drifting from within, and the sound of my own breathing.

I realized then that stillness was not the absence of life.

It was life without resistance.

The temple did not ask the sun to remain.

It did not mourn the coming darkness.

It simply received both.

And so I stood before it, watching the final thread of sunlight disappear beyond the roof.

The universe had not grown smaller with the coming night.

It had grown quiet enough to be heard.

I bowed—not to the temple, nor to the fading light, but to the moment itself.

Then the last golden glow vanished.

And in the quiet shadow of the temple, everything was still.
